Choosing A Domain Name – .org, .net, .com?

Someone asked,

“I’m starting a business and registered the name, but the “.com” isn’t available. What is the best way to handle this? .net or .org or .biz or whatever?”

There are hundreds of domain extensions now–anything from .website to .dentist. I still recommend the .com, even if you have to lengthen it a bit by adding a word.

For businesses who use .biz or .net, I hear they get a surprising number of complaints from customers who either try to send emails to, or try to visit their website at the .com. It’s the preferred extension, so visitors assume it’s what your business is using.

Try adding a word that has relevance to your product or service. Just be sure to avoid using words that are known trademarks. For instance, if you include the word, “amazon” in your domain, you’re going to be challenged by someone’s legal department.

Also, choose a domain name you can say comfortably, without having to spell it out to customers.
