Search Engines-Getting Visits

Each search engine has a unique process for categorizing sites, and their way of doing so changes, but here are some timely tips that will improve your placement.

1. Page Title
This tells the search engine what your site is all about. Keep it short and clear. Use words that appear within the page. Typically, it should run less than 80 characters.

2. Description
Your description lies within the META tag area of the web page. Again, keep it short and direct, using the most important four or five key words that describe your product or service. Use less than 200 characters, and DO NOT overload your description with the same words repeatedly–this can actually ruin your results.

3. Break out of Frames
Sorry, search engines just don’t understand frames, Javascripts, or Flash movies. If your site is built in or around these technologies, you’ll either need to re-design your pages or look for other ways to advertise your business.

4. Get a Descriptive Domain Name
Google is ranking quickly sites whose domain names truly describe the service. For example, NeedWebmaster.com appeared at the top of a search for “need webmaster” shortly after we submitted this site for inclusion.

5. Avoid Redirect Pages
This practice can actually get your site banned from listings. To register a domain name, and then have it “redirect”, or take the user to another site entirely, looks suspicious to search engines.

Ultimately, a simple, quick-loading page with direct, descriptive (not too wordy) text is your best bet at having your site appear nearer the top of search listings. Still, the guaranteed way to appear at the top is to use the “pay-for-placement” programs through Google and Overture (Yahoo/MSN).  If your advertising budget allows it, this can give you the most bang for the buck.  Learn more »
