How can I track an IP address?

Q. We’re getting hit with a lot of spam. I checked the header of the offending e-mail in my thunderbird mail program. It was a bogus reply address, but there is an “originating IP “. Is there a way I can trace this number?

A.  To explain, an IP address is a unique identifying number.  All computers on the internet have one. A typical IP address is a series of numbers with periods, like this:

Though you won’t find the name of the spammer, you can sure get close. Try:
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm
It narrows the results down to city and state, and gives other useful info.
