Do I Even Need a Website?

Maybe, maybe not.

If you’re doing business through Etsy or Facebook or some other online marketplace and you’re happy with the results, it isn’t a big deal NOT to have one. There are still a number of companies that are able to thrive without it. If the business is very niche you might not need it to reach your target audience. Whether or not you need a site depends on the nature of your business, your target market, and your budget.

Ways of doing business online without a website (successfully)

Make Use of Social Media.
It’s a fast, easy way to connect with potential customers. It just takes time. Create profiles on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to share information about your products or services, as well as run contests and promotions. Social media can also be used to provide customer service and support.

Use Email Marketing.
Some firms just use email marketing to stay in touch with customers and promote their businesses. Collect email addresses from your customers when they make a purchase, then use an email service to send out regular news about your business, special offers, or other updates.

Start a Blog.
A blog is an excellent way to establish yourself as an expert in your field and to provide engaging content to your target audience. Use the blog to write about industry news, share tips and advice, or even just tell stories about your business.

Use Marketplaces.
Online sales and auctions like Amazon or Etsy let you sell without having your own website. These marketplaces help you reach a wider audience and start selling quickly. For local sales, try Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or OfferUp.

Decide Who to Sell To.
Be clear about your target audience. Who are you trying to reach? Once you know who your buyer is, tailor your marketing and sales efforts to speak to them. You can easily take payment online through a payment processor, like Square, Paypal, or Stripe.

Build Relationships Offline.
Connect with other businesses in your industry. Attend industry events and conferences. Get involved in online forums and communities to get your name out there.

A website can be a valuable asset to drive sales. If you expect to be in business awhile, and plan to expand, or build a long-term reputation online, you should have at least one or two pages on your own domain (dot.com) name. It shows you’re serious, and customers want to do business with a company that feels permanent. Buyers who want to check you out before contacting you will typically hunt for your website. Also, if you have one, and your competition doesn’t, it puts your brand ahead of others.

Another reason is having control and ownership of the display and content, as well as a professional-looking email address. Facebook, Instagram and online marketplace sites limit what you can do with the look and function of your page. If you change or lose your account, your data is lost with it.

Whatever you decide to do, provide excellent customer service. No matter how you promote your business, it is essential to be responsive to customer inquiries. Resolve issues quickly, and go the extra mile to make sure customers are happy. That sets you apart from the rest. It takes time to build a successful business, so be patient. Filling a need and providing value is the surest way to succeed.
